Artist Statement
I have a background in photography and printmaking, studying at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington D.C. in the 1980s. After raising two children, one with disabilities, and spending years advocating for disability rights, I decided to continue my arts education and chose glass as a medium.
Glass has an inherent strength, yet is so fragile. When a piece of glass doesn't cut as you intended, you find another spot for that "perfect" cut. Waste becomes an integral part of the overall piece. The work begins to evolve and change and the design is perfected. My sketches serve as examples, but my finished pieces rarely resemble the initial sketches. My composition changes and morphs with fluidity, much like the glass. The way the glass breaks guides the design, and the subject shifts with very few straight lines. The colors create balance and a musical symmetry. Occasionally, ceramic pottery, beads, or found objects are incorporated into the piece. I consider myself a representational artist who takes liberties to abstract and simplify the subject as the piece develops.
My work includes glass mosaics with subject matter sourced from beauty found in nature. I gather inspiration from photographs I have taken in the past and present. As I continue my experimentation with the medium, I am layering the glass and adding natural elements to bring out the beguiling qualities of transparency intrinsic to glass.
